HOW DOES THE SCHOOL WORK?
At Livewire Rock Academy we believe music lessons should be fun. Our aim is to teach children and adults practical music skills that can be quickly transferred into a live music setting by incorporating a weekly jam session into the lesson period. Lessons are taught in one room, unplugged, so noise is kept to a minimum.
Students learn on a 2:1 basis (one tutor to two pupils) with our skilled music instructors, where they are taught the basics of their instrument. We make sure students progress at their own pace – tutors spend time with one student before moving to the second – students are only taught together if they are moving at the same pace and are at the same level in the course. Lessons then move onto the jam session – students are taught the rudiments of the songs we are performing that week to play together, plugged in at the end of the lesson in a live band setting.
Every 6 months or so we hold a charity concert where students can show off their skills to friends and family on a proper stage, in a proper venue.
You can book a free taster session anytime with us to see the school in action.
HOW DO WE TEACH?
The tutors teach using our own bespoke modular course materials, which have been carefully structured to teach chords, rudiments and drum patterns in order that students can play together in a band setting from their first lesson.
The modules are taught at a comfortable pace for the individual student. Module 1 introduces the instruments at the most basic level with simple easy-to-follow lessons to get the student started. As each module is completed the challenges get increasingly difficult encouraging the student to develop their skills.
WHAT AGES DO YOU TEACH?
We teach children from 6 years old. Adults are welcome too!
DO YOU NEED ANY PREVIOUS MUSICAL EXPERIENCE TO JOIN?
Not at all – we teach from beginners to those with experience and everyone in between!
HOW LONG ARE THE LESSONS AND WHEN DO THEY TAKE PLACE?
Lessons are one hour long and are split into a 45 minute tutorial and a 15 minute live jam.
We teach on weekday evenings from 6pm. Please check your chosen school for exact times and days.
Lessons go all through the year (we take 2 weeks off at Christmas) and we offer double lessons for any missed due to holidays or sickness, providing prior notice has been given.
DOES THE SCHOOL OPERATE IN SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAYS?
We run the school every week without fail including school and bank holidays – apart from 2 weeks where we close down over Christmas to give our tutors a well earned rest!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO ON HOLIDAY OR CAN’T MAKE IT ONE WEEK?
We give you up to 3 weeks where you can book time off in advance and we will make up the lessons lost in additional lessons. In exceptional circumstances we may give extra weeks to accommodate a long period of absence at the managers discretion, please contact us for more information.
DO YOU RUN EXAM COURSES?
No, we don’t put our students through formal exams. Again, the onus is on music for pleasure and performance in our rock schools, and exams take the students away from that focus. We do, however, have our own certification system where pupils are awarded badges and certificates for completing sections of the course and certain key skills.
DO STUDENTS NEED THEIR OWN INSTRUMENTS?
We provide all the instruments at the rock school, so initially there’s no need to buy them, although we do recommend students have their own after 2-3 months so they can practice at home. Guitar skills can be practiced at home on an acoustic or electric guitar, and if your house is too small for a drum kit, a pair of drum sticks and a practice pad is all you need.
HOW MUCH DO LESSONS COST?
Our music lessons are £20 for the hour, this includes all the learning materials needed by the student and inclusion in the concerts we put on. Lessons are paid for on a monthly standing-order basis. We average this out across 50 weeks in the year, so the monthly payment is £83.33.
Again, if you are going on holiday and you give us prior notice,we can make up any missed lessons.
WHAT IF I WANT TO STOP?
We don’t ask you to commit to a year or even a term. We only ask that you contact us with 1 month’s notice, from the forthcoming monthly payment, if you want to stop.
